[Review] Let’s see ‘Lotus’ through various points of view

▲Role of Seoryeon_Haneul Cho

Seoryeon is a woman who is most talented dancer in the court.

In the festival of the court in order to pray for the reign of peace, she presents her dance playing Haeguem.

Her smile like an yellow flower and the melody of Haegeum add more beauty on her dance.

Her dance definitely rises above the other dancers.

The king is fascinated by her in a moment. In this reason, the jealous queen throw her out from the court.

▲Role of Dodam_Jinhong Jeon

There is another man who fell in love to Seoryeon. That is Dodam, the best worrier of the court.

He has had a secret crush on Seoryeon with whom he passed his childish in the court.

Therefore he could not stay calm during his training because of his heart to Seoryeon
and of concerning about her who was thrown away from the court.

While he was looking at a Lotus and thinking about Seoryeon,

he hears to a melody of Haegeum which is carried by the wind.

He wanders in the forest following the melody and finally he sees her.

▲Role of Dodam_Jinhong Jeon, Role of Seoryeon_Haneul Cho

They confirm the love to each other under the moonshine.

They draw the ‘melody of the love’ playing Daegeum and Haegeum together.

Tip for enjoying <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>

From the various points of view!

Point of view No. 1 “Han(限, feeling of oppression)” The representative emotion of Korean people.

This story is about ‘Han(限)’ , the sorrowful feeling of Seoryeon.

She has beautiful mind and talent but her life is turbulent from the outside effect.

In the unavoidable life, she bears resentment.

She endures many difficulties and prison life to keep her real love toward Dodam.

However she looses her life from the sword of the King and her feeling of oppression comes out to the story.

Her sorrowful dance is not as same as the adorable dance in the first part of the story

and it describes the deep missing heart.

If you see the story through ‘Han(feeling of oppression)’ which is the collective feeling  of Korea,

You can totally understand and feel the emotion of Seoryeon
and can see the change of her dance from the adorable to sorrowful!

▲Role of Seoryeon_Haneul Cho

And the story talking about the feeling of oppression definitely has the story of solving the oppression!

If you see the story with the point of view of the feeling of oppression,
you can feel the deep meaning of the revivification in the last part of the performance.

It could be solved by the involved person

but also it could be solve by the power of wish and love from the others.

The peak of the story.

The ritual for revivification where Seoryeon’s oppression is solved leaves a catharsis to the audiences!!

▲Role of Mohwa_Narae

Point of view No. 2  The two musical instruments of protagonists

Let’s look into the femininity and masculinity of two instruments.

Seoryeon and Dodam dance playing instruments.

It is impressive of the harmony between dancing and playing music in their love scene.

The harmony of the two instruments symbolizes the love of Dodam and Seoryeon.

But why it is Daegeum and Haegeum?

Haegeum is traditionally symbolized as a feminine instrument
from it’s figure and meaning of the two strings that one is smiling string and the other is crying string.

It is not recognized as a instruments played by women but it is recognized as ‘Feminine instrument’ because of it’s sound.

Daegeum has a power of vibration so it is recognized as masculine instruments.

It is because of the straight image of ‘bamboo’  and the sound.

As this performance is dance drama without the lines,

the gender image of the instruments and its’ harmony through the music make the clear what the story want to say..

Point of view No. 3  Climatic sound of drum

The shaman ‘Mohwa’ performs the ritual for revivification of Seoryeon.

For the climatic scene where everyone’s wishes are gathering, the sound of drum can not be missed.

For the long moment, only sound of the drum takes place rather than the melodic music.

In this scene, every actors are on the stage.

The one wish is described by the sound of drum.

The one wish from all for the revivification of Seoryeon is described by the drum sound which continue the beat.

And it sounds like the sounds of the heart beating so it make the audiences wish the heart beating of Seoryeon.

The tension and the drum sound like a heart beating gather the stage and the audience in the one.

Right after the drum sounds, Seoryeon finally revives miraculously.

[Jeongdong Culture Tour]

Let’s travel to Modern Cultural Heritage in Jeongdong-gil with a  Cultural commentator.

Jeongdong Culture Tour

There are locations that you could meet walking through Deoksugung-palace stonewall(Doldam-gil).

Seoul Museum of Arts, Jungmyeongjeon, Jeongdong Theater, Baejae Hakdang, the site of Sontak Hotel and Canadian Ambassy..

“Jeongdong” is place where the representative cultural heritages are gathering.

Let’s follow “Jeongdong Culture Tour”,
a program that you could learn about the history of Jeongdong touring with a commentator
and that you could see Korean traditional performing arts as well!

The cultural heritage commentators from National Trust Korea for cultural heritage join this tour.

1. About the name of ‘Jeongdong’ and its history..

The commentator explained about the history of the name ‘Jeongdong’ and of the location.

The name of ‘Jeongdong’ is from ‘Jeong-neung’
which is the royal tomb of the queen ‘Sindeok’ (Mrs. Kang) was the wife of King Taejo Lee Sung-gye.

As many modern cultural heritages are gathering in this place,

Jeongdong is the starting place of Korean modern culture.

The first place of modern education: Baejae Hakdang/ Ewha Hakdang.

The first place where the hospital for women: Bogu Yeogwan.

The first journalism office: Sin-a Ilbo.

The first place of christian baptism in Korea: Jeongdong Jaeil Church.

The first modern theater: Jeongdong Theater.

Therefore, “Jeongdong” is meaningful place where we can see the changes of modern culture in Korea
and it is called “No.1 place of Modern Cultural Heritage.

 2. The route of Jeongdong Culture Tour

Here below the route of the tour.

It is subject to change depending on the culture and the audiences.

However, mostly the route runs as below.

Depart from Jeongdong Theater → Former Russian Legation → Ewha Girls High School(Ewha Hakdang) → Jeongdong Jaeil Church →  Baejae Hakdang → Arrive at Jeongdong Theater

”Jeongdong” is located in the downtown of Seoul
but due to Deoksu-gung palace and Jeongdong Park, it has many green area and it is designed as walk-friendly way.

Therefore, even in the heat wave of August, I could feel coll with the sound of cicadas.

The first visiting spot was “Former Russian Legation”.

#. Former Russian Legation

▲ The Site of Former Russian Legation| Photo From : Naver

The Former Russian Legation was registered as Historical landmark No. 253.

After the assassination of Empress Myeongseong-hwangu,
King Gojong and the Crown Prince Sought refuge in the Russian Embassy for one year.

It was huge two storied renaissance-building of  5,000 square meters.

However it was destroyed by Korean war so now only small part of the building is remained.

Can you imagine how huge it was?

#. Canadian Embassy

Lots of Embassies are located in Jeongdong-gil.

Walking down from the Former Russian Legation,

We can meet the Canadian Embassy.

After the U.S. Embassy is founded in 1883, in Jeongdong-gil,

the embassy of England, Russia, France, Germany and Belgium were founded in this area.

Let’s move to Ewha Girls High School.

#. Ewha Girls High School : Former site of Sontak Hotel

The reason why we visit Ewha Girls High School is ‘Sontak Hotel’.

This location was the site of Sontak Hotel.

Do you know about the Sontak Hotel?

Sontak Hotel was the first western style hotel in Korea.

It was founded by Mrs Sontak who was the wife of Russian Ambassador in Korea.

At that time, this hotel was social & diplomatic place.

After the time, it was received by Ewha Hakdang and used as student dorm.

▲ Monument of the site of Sontak Hotel / The participants of Jeongdong Culture Tour

#. Ewha Hakdang

Ewha Hakdang was first private school for women in Korea which was founded by Mrs. Scranton.

King Gojong bestowed the name of the school “Ewha”(literally means “Pear Blossoms”)

The school began in small house.

However, the school has many difficulties.

Because nobody wanted to educate their daughters because of the feudalism.

Therefore, at the first time, there was only school without students.

After one year of the foundation, Ewha hakdang had the first student.

The first student followed her parents because they heard that the school will cover the life of students as well as the education.

However, after few days, the parents brought back their daughter.

Because of the social recognition that sending a daughter to the Ewha Hakdang is like selling her to western ghost.

Therefore, Mrs Scranton wrote a pledge.

The contents of the pledge was like below :

“Without the permission of the parents, we don’t bring the girl
not only the western country but also the out of the school.”

Then, they could have the first student.

Even if the many difficulties from the first time,
the Ewha Hakdang has turned out many excellent women in the history.

The first female instructor, Kyung-sook Lee.
The first student who went to study to U.S. Ransa Ha.

I appreciate to Mrs. Scranton who played significant role for female education in Korea.

Jeongdong Jaeil Church was founded as the first protestant church in Korea
and it was registered as the historical landmark No.256.

Actually, it was the place where the declaration of independence was copied  in secret.

In this reason, the pastor in charge, Pil-ju Lee and a missionary Dong-wan Park were jailed
as they were the members of the 33 Korean readers.

#. Baejae Hakdang

▲ Baejae Hakdang | Photo From : Naver

The last spot of Jeongdong Culture Tour was ‘Baejae Hakdang’.

It is the first modernized institution in Korea and it was founded by pastor. Appenzeller.
At the first time, the school was begun in a Hanok but later, it is built as western building.

The significant students from ‘Baejae Hakdang’ are :

The first president Seungman Rhi, Writer Dohyang Na, Poet Sowel Kim, Scholar of Hanguel Sigyeong Joo
and fighter for independence Chungchun Ji.

It was interesting that the first modernized institution and the first female educational institute
were located in the same ‘Jeongdong’.

After the tour, you will see the Korean traditional performance <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>.

You can participate this program until November,

Every second and fourth Saturdays 2 pm.

Only at Jeongdong Theater!

Hot Cultural Trend! : Wearing Hanbok & Playing Janggu!

[Wearing Hanbok & Playing Janggu!]

Hot Cultural Trend,

Wearing Hanbok & Playing Janggu!

Do you know the recent trend?

We can easily meet the young people & foreigners who wear Hanbok
in downtown of Seoul
especially, near by the old palace and Hanok villages
such as Insadong, Bukchon and Samcheongdong.

For the young generation, ‘Hanbok’ is not old fashions which is very uncomfortable
but it became a ‘Culture’ and ‘Enjoyable thing’.

The tradition that we meet by experience becomes a new cultural trend.

Then, how about having one more experience of tradition rather than just wearing Hanbok?

I would like to recommend you “Wearing Hanbok & Playing Janggu!”.

I wore Hanbok very after a long time for the Janggu class.

I have thought that Hanbok is very uncomfortable cloth.

However, after wearing it, I figured out that it is very comfortable and cool!

The venue that you can have the experience of Janggu class wearing Hanbok is ‘Jeongdong Maru’
It is brand-new venue of Jeongdong Theater.

The venue has traditional housing interiors so, I posed like a Confucian scholar.

While I was waiting for the Janggu class, I could find many foreigners in Jeongdong Maru.

It was very cool to see the foreigners who is looking forward to having Janggu class wearing Hanbok.

And Korean Traditional Culture.

Now, It becomes an world wide enjoyable things.

There were many young kids waiting for the class.

Then, Let’s start to learn Janggu!

Janggu class began with introduction of how to call the stick of Janggu.

On the right hand, we have Gung-chae which has round tip.

On the left hand, we have Yeol-chae which is flat one.

▲Gung-Chae                                                                                                ▲Yeol-Chae

Dung, the sound when you hit the both side of Janggu.

Kung, the sound when you hit only left side of Janggu.

Tta, the sound when you hit only right side of Janggu.

The rhythm that you learn from the janggu class of Jeongdong Maru is ‘Hwimori’

‘Hwimori’ is one of the fastest rhythm of Korean traditional music.

Therefore it is very exciting and energetic rhythm.

‘Hwimori’ seems like difficult rhythm for the beginers

but once I accustomed to the rhythm I could play fast.

Therefore the atmosphere in the Jeongdong maru becomes so hot.

After playing Janggu, I could feel my stress off and it was so cool.

And as there were many people who wear hanbok like me, I could feel that we became the one!

It seems like very special experience as I wore the Korean traditional cloth and played Korean traditional music.

Janggu class is very enjoyable experience without burden.

I would like to recommend it to all from young kids to foreign people who want to learn about Korean tradition.

For the couples who want to enjoy a special dating,

I would like to recommend to experience Janggu Class rather than only wearing Hanbok.

Hope you enjoy the hot trend with “Wearing Hanbok & Playing Janggu!”

Jeongdong Press Interview : Jin Hong Jeon

[Jeongdong Press Interview: Jin Hong Jeon]

<Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>

Interview with Jin Hong Jeon who plays role of ‘Dodam’

‘Seoryeon’, the best dancer of the court. ‘Dodam’, the best worrier of the court.

The love between them could be safe in Joseon era?

Dodam fell in love with Seoryeon who gained the favorite of the king.

He looks Seoryeon with pathetic express on his face because of the wall between the two.

Then, how he could keep his love in front of the greedy king?

I met Jin Hong Jeon who plays ‘Dodam’, the protagonist of <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>

Who describes sometimes the strong emotion as a worrier
and sometimes pathetic emotion as a man who falls in love.

I met Jin Hong Jeon who just finished 4 pm performance so he could not remove the makeup on his face.

It was very impressed that I could see the overlapped two faces : Dodam and the actor Jin Hong Jeon.

Q. I would like to know why you decided to join this performance.

My life as a dancer was started by Chunghan Kim who is the director/ choreographer of this performance.

By chance, I saw a dancer in dance competition and it was really impressive.

And later, I figured out that he was a student of Director Chunghan Kim.

I started ‘dance’ having respect for him naturally.

Therefore, I applied to a audition of <Chunhyang> which is one of the director Kim’s work in Jeongdong Theater

and I played the protagonist of the performance.

As the same reason, I would like to join this performance as director Kim’s work

and finally I play the role of Dodam after passing the audition.

Q. How did you feel when you meet Director Kim at the first time?

At the first time, it was very difficult to close to him because of his Charisma.

However, as I work with him more and more, he gave me a lot of suggestion time to time.

Therefore I could easily depend on him.

I always have a lot of thing to learn from him.

Q. The character of Dodam is focused on ‘the love toward Seoryoen’.

Therefore do you have any principal aim to describe Dodam?

Dodam is the best worrier in the court. Therefore I would like to describe the powerful figure.

Because I thought that the love of the strong man could be emphasized deeply and sorrowfully.

Therefore I aim at showing the strong figure as a worrier and it is well shown in the scene of the battle.

I strongly describe the motion of the worrier putting power on body when I take the sword.

Those kinds of scene well show ‘Worrier Dodam’.

And also, there are many choreograph where I need to life the female protagonist in the scenes with Seoryeon.

I think that those kinds of scenes show well the male attraction.

I personally would like to make my character stand out as an actor.

However, for the whole performance, it is important to make balance with others.

▲ Scene of Dodam in training with his colleagues_”Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More”

Q.Who do you think Dodam is?

Dodam is a worrier who get favorite of the King like Seoryeon.

He is the closest person of the king like king’s family.

Therefore the King gets angry of the love between the two people who are the favorites of the king.

Dodam is devoted to the King but also he is very pure to fall in love.

The figure of pure is the order of Director Kim.

“Strong man outwardly but romanticist internally.”

The figure of a Romanticist looks like ‘Mongryong’ in Chunghyang.

▲ Dodam’s Deaguem play _”Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More”

Q. If there are similar things between Dodam and Mongryong, is it easy to describe Dodam?

My answer is No.

Only for the love, they are similar. However Dodam is a worrier so I need to describe totally differently.

Director Kim ordered me to have ‘step of warrior’.

However, It was very difficult to remove the Mongryong’s character by my self.

I even don’t know if I describe the step of warrior having the pure mind toward the love at the same time.

Q. Which scene is the most difficult for you?

The duet scene with Seoryeon is most difficult for me.

This is the scene where I need to show the deep love and the relation
but it is not easy to express the emotion in the calm music.

If I have mistake, it is shown well in the quiet music.

Therefore we need to have completely well matched motion

and also we need to show ‘a beautiful love’ at the same time.

It is the reason why the scene is the most difficult.

▲ Duet Dance with Seoryeon_’Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More’

Q. What is the emotion that you would like to deliver to the audience?

And How do would you like to be memorized in the performance?

Everyone has the memory of love.

Therefore I would like to make this performance where the audience could remember their love.

Many elder audiences have told me like :

“I used to have a love like Dodam and Seoryeon….”

Therefore this performance is beautiful.

I want the audience can be moved by the beauty.

Also, I would like to show a performance where the public could think that ‘The beauty of the Korean traditional dance is a genre which can deliver the impression.’

And I would like to be remembered as a romanticist who devoted to his love.

I want to be remembered by the dance of ‘Dodam’.

As a Korean traditional dance major, Jin Hong Jeon has a big proud on Korean dance.

It was meeting that I could remind his dance from his talk about the beauty of the Korean dance.

I look forward Dodam of Jin Hong Jeon in the future of the performance!

A Story of Women who came back from the death : Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More

‘Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More’ is a non-verbal performance telling only with Korean traditional dance. Without telling the story and even without the knowledge, there are things to understand on the stage. There are the rhythm, motion, ideology and emotion which is hidden in Korean people’s mind. It is expressed by the folk tale ‘The tales of Mrs. Domi” and “Igongbonpuri” and by the Korean traditional dances such as ‘Taepyeongmu” and “Sword Dance”.

The Story of “Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More” is based on the Korean old folk tales-“The tale of Mrs. Domi” and “Igongbonpuri”. “The tale of Mrs. Domi” tells about that the lascivious king of Baekjae tries to violate Mrs. Domi but the wise woman overcomes the danger and confirm her love with her husband. “Igongbonpufi” is a one of the narrative shamanic myths in Jeju-gut(Shamanic ritual in Jeju Island). It is about that Wongag-ami who died in difficulties finally comes to life again as a flower thanks to her husband and son who buried her body in a flower garden.

In the performance of “Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More” is a story about “Women” and “Revivification”. In this story, we have “Seoryoen” who keeps her belief and love in the difficulties like Mrs. Domi and Wongang-Ami.

Seoryeon is the best dancer in the court and Dodam, the best worrier in the court is her lover. However, the king is lust for Seoryeon because of her beauty. Seonryeon refuse king’s propose and finally she is jailed in a prison. Dodam fights with the king for his lovver and in this process, Seoryeon dies by King’s sword. And the shaman of the court perform the ritual for revivification of Seoryeon and finally she comes again to the life.

In this part, Mohwa, the shaman of the court, is very important. In the Joseon dynasty, Shaman is a priesthood but received double discrimination as a woman and as a shaman. However, in Korean traditional narrative shamanic myth, the shaman is heroic character who give the life to people. In the performance of “Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More”, Mohwa, the shaman give a life to Seoryeon with her strong energy.

In other words, through the two folk tales, this performance show the symbol of the women in difficulties and the vital power of women. ‘Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More” retells the Korean traditional literary  ideology with the contemporary sense.

The performance shows not only the folk tales but also Korean traditional dances. The dances consist of ‘Parilmu’, a Confucian ritual dance and ‘Taepyeongmu’, a dance praying for the reign of peace and ‘Sward dance’. The dance completes the story.

Also, Seoryeon plays ‘Haegeum’ while her dance. Haegeum is one of the representative Korean instruments which has only two strings. One string is called ‘the string of laughing’ and the other is called ‘the string of crying’. Seoryeon expresses the two faces through her dance.

The scene of the revivification is the highlight of the performance. Mohwa get the audiences feel the catharsis with her dance and act. The exciting music and the unique beat of the Korean traditional percussion raise the immersion level of the audience.
