Welcome First Time in Jeongdong Jang-gu Class!

Two travelers from Kuwait and Bahrain visited Jeongdong Theater to experience Korean traditional culture.
This event was the  collaboration of the Middle East Branch of Korea Tourism Organism and Jeongdong Theater.
The two participants are very famous Youtubers in their countries.

They looked around the theater receiving explanation about Jeongdong Theater’s performance and experience programs by an interpreter.
Also they broadcasted it through Instatram Live and introduce their audiences the theater.

First of all, they experienced ‘Jang-gu Class’ in Jeongdong Maru.
They talked to the fans in their countries through the Live broadcasting and took pictures in front of the Jang-gu.

The class began with how to hold the stick and how to pronounce the sound.
“Dung” sound when hit both sides.
“Kung” sound when hit left side.
“Tta” sound when hit right side.
The two ladies followed well the sound.

Left Ftami (Kuwait, with 180 million followers) / Right Khawla (Bahrain, with 210 million followers)

They learned about Hwimori Jangdan (Fast Rhythm of Korea) and they were excited with it.
“Dung Dung KungTta Kung” “Dung TtaTta KungTta Kung” “KungTtaKung”
They learned these three rhythms and at the end they played the rhythms by them selved.

They seemed like to enjoy the rhythm!

Also, they saw a great music play by Yongwoo Nam who acted for Korean Mask Dance Musical “Dong-Dong”.
The music with Hwimori Jangdan captivated the two ladies.

Jang-gu Class with Korean instrument and Korean rhythm!
During a break, I asked them about their impression.
Khawla from Bharain siad  “It was fun but the terms were difficult”
Ftami from Kuwait who really enjoyed the rhythm said “It was easy and nice”
About the impression of Korea, they said “Everything is beautiful including foods, people, and the weather and I want to live here.”

Following the Jang-gu Class, they participate ‘Korean Dance Class’.
They learned the Korean dance beating with Korean traditional music.
They learned it easier than Jang-gu and they danced one song without instructor’s help.

They received the certificate after completing the Jang-gu Class and the Korean Dance Class!
Also, they received a pencil case which has very Korean traditional beauty.
One of their followers who planned to travel to LA said,
“I bought the flight ticket to Korea after seeing this Live”.

I hope many travelers visit Korea through this event
and they could imagine Jeongdong Theater thinking of Korea.

Review of Musical PANN: The Stage! The inexorability of satire!

Hello, This is review from Jeongdong Press!!

I went to see the musical PANN: The Stage which is staged from Dec 7 to Dec 31.

Here below I share the review!

A scene from Musical PANN: The Stage

The boundary between improvisation and script is broken!

Once the performance begins, the actors come out from the back of the audience and they make noisy to start!
They say hello and high five to the audience. It makes the auditorium and the stage as one place.
Due to the concept of story tellers who talk to the audience, the whole auditorium seems to be the stage.
Therefore, I could concentrate to the performance well.
Also, in the middle of the performance, the actors conduct impromptu talk to the audience
and this part does not seem an acting but play they enjoy.
I was very happy with the natural laughing of the actors.

A scene from Musical PANN: The Stage

The inexorability of satire!

The protagonists of the musical ‘PANN: The Stage’ are ‘Jeongi-su’ which is the profession of storyteller in the last of Joseon era.
They satirized the dark reality.
The storytellers in 2017 satirize the society where we live now and they shout “Who is the owner of DAS?!”.
I hope we also have that kind of storyteller who satirizes the society and make people feeling relieved in this era.

A scene from Musical PANN: The Stage

All kinds of genre are here on the stage!

The music of the performance is lively played in the theater.
During the performance, the musicians keep playing the music in the back of the stage.
It makes the performance more lively!
Even if the background of the performance is Joseon era, the performance presents various kind of music:
Various kinds of western music including Bossa nova, Tango, Swing are played by Korean traditional music instrument
and it was really fantastic experience for me!

Furthermore, various kinds of Korean traditional dance including Tal-chum, shoulder dance
make harmony with other kinds of music in the performance.

I had no idea about the performance before the performance start
but I wan never bored during the 2 hours of the performance.
It shows well the Korean excitement!

I hope you also come and see this great performance for your wonderful end of the year!

Interview with Yoonsoo Kim, Choreographer of “Silla”

Based on the ancient Persian epic, ‘Kush Nama’,

‘Silla’ is a performing arts that describe the great epic with the fantastic stage arts.

And Yoonsoo Kim, the choreographer of the show delivers the story through the arts of body

and his dance is mainly consist of Korean traditional dance which is very beautiful and dynamic.

Here below the interview with him.

Yoonsoo Kim, Choreographer of ‘Silla’
The top dancer of the National Dance Company
Awarded by ‘Kim Baikbong Arts Arward’

Q. What is your point on the choreography of “Silla”?
-I focused on the cause-and-effect in the story. In other words, the flow of the story and the fantasy.
Therefore, I have thought many times on the motions and description replacing dance to describe the changes of the character.
For example, at some point, the characters move all together like one person.
On the other hands, each character has its own personality and specific figure to show the crash of ideologies from one and another.
Also, I tried to complete it under the scrip and the direction of the director.
Q. You might have concerned a lot following the director’s structure of new genre and concepts.

– Seongsin Choi, the director, is very creative person who always creats a new direction.
I think, therefore, he could created this performance which is created as new genre.
New ideas from the staffs support the creative thinking of the director
and they complete the new genre and the structure of this performance.
The new genre which is so called ‘performance like a show’ is completed by the equipment including the stage and the light.
And the dance maximizes the story describing the flow.

Q. Then what is the role and the effect of the dance in the performance where the technology of stage is maximized?

– It is required to have a medium that connect the technology, the story and the characters.
I think, ‘Dance’ is the importance medium which give the connection.
Through the dance, the equipment and the space are explained.
While the stage equipment and the music attract audiences’ audio-visual sense,
the dance attracts their emotion and helps them to understand the story.

Q. Actually, the visual distinction between the people from Silla and the people from Persian is clear.
Do you have any distinction on the dance between the two ethnics?
– As you mentioned,
the two ethnics are distinguished from one and another one dimensional way including the stage, costumes, and lights.
In addition, it is required to consider there cultural communication tradition such as motion and language.
Unfortunately, there are not many resources regarding Persia.
Therefore, the imagination is required.
As Persia is masculine nation, it is described as military culture using dynamic and powerful motion.
On the other hands, Silla is described as the opposite style such as soft and tolerant world.
From the distinction of choreography describing the two nation,
it is clear to see the good and the evil when the two nation appear at the same time.

Q. I’ve heard that the choreography of upgraded ‘Silla’ is based on ‘Korean newly arts dance(신무용)’
Could you please explain about the ‘Korean newly arts dance’?

– The meaning of ‘Korean newly arts dance’ is  ‘a dance which is newly created from 1920 in Korea’.
The genre is a importance cultural asset for the history of modern dance in Korea.
Because it is a bridge between the traditional dance and contemporary creation.
Most distinguished part which shows ‘Korean newly arts dance’ is the finale which consists of ‘Hyangbalmu’.
It is really attractive dance in which dancers hold ‘Hyangbal(Small percussion)’.
I borrowed elements of the ‘Korean newly arts dance’
while the whole dance structure is distinguished from the ‘Korean newly arts dance’.
Also, every elements including stage, light, costumes and make-up are well harmonized in the finale.
The ‘Korean newly arts dance’ is reflected as ‘old styled dance’ or ‘traditional dance’ but it is still realized on the stage with new format.
I hope I could retain the dance for the future.
Q. Do you have any specific philosophy as a choreographer of Korean dance?
– Korean dance has a long history. Therefore, it is required to understand its history and meaning through the dance.
I  feel a call to present the dance with the deep value of Korean dance as well as to transform it contemporary value.

In this day, I could see the complete version of the musical.
I’m sure that it is sssssso funny!

Wait, do you know what is “Jeongi-su” is?

Professional storytellers are called “Jeongi-su” in Joseon era.

They got many loves from the public as they were very talented in storytelling.

The musical “Pann: The stage” is a story about a man(Dalsu) who tried to become a Jeongi-su
after seeing Hotae, the best story teller in Joseon.

Left: Dalsu_Actor Jicheol Kim, Right: Hotae_Actor Jihoon Kim

Hotae and Dalsu satirize a district magistrate who ban them from storytelling.

The two storytellers ridicule him talking that “he has a smell of money”.

They critic about the irrational society with storytelling.

It is so gratifying and powerful!

The story goes to the climax when the two storytellers are taken to the government office.

In front of the district magistrate, Dalsu says

“A man who has a chip mouth like a dog gives the birds trouble and it has been at least over ten years”

Dalsu_Actor Jicheol Kim (Left) & Hotae_Actor Jihoon Kim(Right), giving a storytelling with a marionette show.

And a big sounds of percussion comes to the stage.

And birds appears on the stage and the birds peck at the  district magistrate.

This scene was the most memorable for me.

It is the time when the public’s anger are at a simmer.

I’m really looking forward to seeing this scene on the real stage.

Also, the acting was sssso powerful.

The two actors showed a great valance.
