2018 Jeong Dong Theater Tradition Series Performance

‘The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu’

There’s an another interesting part in the polished Korean traditional performance ‘The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu’!

which is ….. interesting get to see the props that done by hand of master craftsman!

Let’s check out the story of ‘sapsal’ dog,

one of the props in ‘The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu’!

“Lion mask?  No~ It’s ‘sapsal’ dog mask!”

Jang Noksu with inborn artistic talents, has been selected to be a gisaeng of Gaheungcheong (residence for gisaengs from all over the nation who are not yet accepted into the royal palace) by Prince Je-an, and she starts having proper gisaeng training.

Later, star gisaeng Noksu getting well-known, has been spread like wildfire in Hanyang (capital of Joseon). All the nobleman of Hanyang has gathered in front of Gaheungcheong, with the purpose of seeing Noksu. At the same time, King Yeonsan visits Gaheungcheong with disguise in sapsal dog costume, to look for Noksu….

The another ‘cute’ face of ‘sapsal’dog mask, compare to lion!

Round face and big clear eyes is charming, but there’s a secret of lion mask~

which is able to protrude his tongue!

The nobleman is asking Noksu to pour the drinks for them.

Noksu refuses to do so as an artist, but she pours the drink for sapsal dog.

and at this time, sapsal dog sticks out his tougue~

2018 Jeong Dong Theater Tradition Series Performance’The Palace:Tale of Jang Noksu’_ King Yeonsan take off the ‘sapsal’ dog mask, first meet with Jang Noksu

“Q. Why isn’t a lion mask,  but ‘sapsal’ dog mask?”

The writter of ‘The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu’, Kyeong Min-Seon, had mentioned that it’s better to have sapsal dog disguise for King Yeonsan’s  first appearance in this show. Although there’s similarity with Korean traditional show like lion dance,  it’s considered as a ‘Korean’ representative animal in mind.

The appearance of ‘mask’ could display the personality of King Yeonsan in term of loving in entertainment. Furthermore, as sapsal dog also able to show the cuteness and friendliness, as well as the Korean traditional element, sapsal dog mask been appeared in the show, instead of lion mask.

‘The king with sapsal dog mask’  is depicted metaphorically and upgrade the level of interesting!

“sapsal dog mask, how to get this done?”

Drawing of ‘sapsal’dog

The prop designer of ‘The Palace:Tale of Jang Noksu’, Kim Sang Hee had referred to bulks of Korean folk painting of sapsal dog for the mask design.

The characteristics of sapsal dog are long hair, big ears and with some spots.

But, the performance has to show the movement like lion dance, so designer decided to make the mask bigger and rounder, in order to emphasize the cuteness.

Prop designer drew the sketch of design directly.

Design sketch of ‘Sapsal dog’ mask by Kim Sang Hee designer

Can you see the ‘cuteness’ from the sketch?

Is there any difference from the real mask?

It was fully hand-made with sincere, and it’s one of the main points in this show.

” two meaning of sapsal dog mask in ‘The Palace:Tale of Jang Noksu'”

2018 Jeong Dong Theater Tradition Series Performance’The Palace:Tale of Jang Noksu’_ Prop of ‘sapsal’ dog mask, design by Kim Sang Hee/ Made by Mo-In

The first meaning of sapsal dog mask is the mask covering the real face of  King Yeonsan in the first meeting with Jang Noksu. But, why it must be sapsal dog mask? It is because the sapsal dog mask could show the character of King Yeonsan who loves entertainment, as well as the King with the tragic story in history.

So, whether is that a real face under the cover of sapsal dog mask, is the cover real, the mask represents his confuse mind. In the show, King Yeonsan dance freely with sapsal dog mask, is that showing King Yeonsan eager for the freedom of entertainment?

Those nobleman did not recognize the King with sapsal dog mask…

Jang Noksu offer a glass of drink to sapsal dog rather than offer it for nobleman.

One ‘sapsal dog mask’ reflects quite a few situation and interesting element in this show.

Second meaning…

reformation raises up, the people who defended for palace have left…

In the frightening situation, only Noksu stand by the side of King Yeonsan.

Noksu pours the last drink for King, and she dances with full-sincere for him.

At this time , King Yeonsan is holding the mask and nagging, and shouting like sapsal dog.

It seems going back to the first time they met….

When two people didn’t play around and focus in power, just purely separate the gisaeng’s art skill and entertainment, what will happen if they continue live in this way?

It’s seems that they foresee the tragic life and ending,

they start dancing like their first meet.

First, the sapsal dog shows the cuteness part but at last it shows the sadness face.

Lastly, they recall their memory of first meet and dance their last dance.
