[EMILE] Viewing ‘EMILE’ Through Photos

Viewing Jeongdong Theater Gyeongju Brand Performance ‘EMILE’ Through Photos

Prologue

Let’s go back to an ancient time of the Silla period.

This is a heart-wrenching yet beautiful love story.

Here’s the love story between Hyegong, the king of a kingdom, and an innocent woman named Emile.

First, Birth

A shaman is a woman who receives orders from the heavens.

The shaman administered a ritual to announce the birth of the king as arranged by the heavens.

The shaman, Sohwa, is announcing the birth of Hyegong to the world. The atmosphere is still yet heavy!

Second, Time

Winter past by unknowingly and we are now awaiting the arrival of spring. Time is passing by.

In front of the majestic scenery of Bulguksa Temple, countless numbers of people are dancing merrily with Lady Emile.

Third, Coronation

This is the coronation of the matured Hyegong. People have gathered around and are enjoying the ceremony.

The hwarang, an elite warrior group of male youth representative of Silla, are performing their skilful sword dance. Can you spot Emile who is watching them? The eyes of the curious Emile are shining!

Fourth, Rivalry

Can you see Yung who appeared in Hyegong’s quarters after he left?

The rivalry between the royalty who supports King Hyegong and the anti-Hyegong Yung begins.

Yung’s greed for authority is starting to show.

Fifth, Love

Hyegong, who is anguishing about the rivalry with Yung, stumbled on Emile who was strolling on the Woljeonggyo bridge.

The bright and genuine Emile provides a source of comfort for Hyegong and the two of them fell in love.

The way they look at each other shows how much affection they have for each other.

Sixth, Greed

This is a scene of the drunk Yung entering the king’s quarters and the plain and outright display of his desire for the throne.

Yung threatens Emile and Hyegong with all kinds of schemes and methods.

Seventh, Destiny

In order to escape from Yung’s grip, Emile wanders to the Buddha statue at Seokguram Grotto and the destined reunion between Emile and Hyegong is realised.

The pitifulness of this scene showing the pair who keep missing each other can be felt ever more strongly.

Eighth, Return

Emile, who awaits Hyegong, is dragged away miserably by the soldiers..

At the scene of the offering ceremony, Emile, fearing that Hyegong may be injured, abandons everything and sacrifices herself.

Hyegong, who witnessed everything that had happened, breaks down and wails.

Epilogue

The Emile Bell is finally constructed.

The joyous people are carrying lanterns and dancing while striking the bell at the centre, and the clear yet sad sound of the bell can be heard.

The impressive stage setup and extravagant videography can only be truly felt when viewing the performance in person.

Watch the beautiful yet heart-wrenching love story <EMILE> at Jeongdong Theater.

[The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] Character Analysis #3! “Jang Noksu” Who Uses Her Skills in the Arts to Gain Power to Become Joseon’s Deadly Cinderella!!

@noksutagram <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu> Character Analysis – ‘Jang Noksu’

2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance

<The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>

Experience the charm of Jang Noksu’s alluring dancing and the beauty of Korean traditions in <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>!

It’s time to break down and analyse each of the characters that appears in <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>!

<The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu> character analysis!

The third character of this series, the Deadly Cinderella of Joseon Dynasty who uses her skills in the arts to gain power!!!!

Let’s delve into the analysis of “Jang Noksu” using 3 key words! 🙂

#1. Heungcheong ‘Jang Noksu’

Heungcheong’ is a term used to describe the outstanding gisaengs of Joseon who were congregated during the reign of King Yeonsan.

At the beginning, ‘Jang Noksu’ was a poor woman and a member of the servant class.

She became a servant of Prince Je-an’s family and married another servant there, bearing a child.

In fact, she was not an outstanding beauty but a 30-year-old married woman…!!

However, at the age of 30, her youthful face made her look as if she’s 16!!

Thereafter, ‘Jang Noksu’ became a gisaeng of Gaheungcheong and began to master her dancing and singing skills.

Also, she was a sharp and clever woman who could see through a person easily.

2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] Jang Noksu role_Jo Haneul

During the performance, Jang Noksu dances in the middle of the streets and displays her talent that lies deep within her!

This part was a dramatisation of Prince Je-an selecting Noksu, then leading her to enter into Gaheungcheong 🙂

#2. Entertainer ‘Jang Noksu’

In contrast with the depiction of Jang Noksu as an ‘evil woman’  or a ‘temptress’ in the countless productions she appeared in, she is portrayed as a beautiful ‘entertainer’ in <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>.

2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] Janggo dance

It was said that Jang Noksu’s excellent singing and outstanding dancing as a humble woman resulted in the widespread rumours of her.

In the actual diaries of King Yeonsan, he depicts Jang Noksu as follows:

“Her singing is so good that her voice sounds clear and distinct even if her lips doesn’t move…”

2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] Jang Noksu role_Jo Haneul

During the performance, Jang Noksu also flaunted her skills in the arts by performing dances such as the Janggo drum and the Gyobang dance, showing her reputation as Joseon’s finest gisaeng!

2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] Jang Noksu role_Jo Haneul

#3. Royal Consort Suk-yong of the Jang clan ‘Jang Noksu’

Suk-yong (淑容)’ was one of the ranks given by the king to his concubines.

King Yeonsan gave the rank of ‘suk-yong’ to Jang Noksu upon her entrance into the royal palace and addressed her as ‘Suk-yong Jang-ssi (淑容 張氏)’ (Royal Consort Suk-yong of the Jang clan) from then on.

2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] Jang Noksu role_Jo Haneul

2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] Jang Noksu role_Jo Haneul

You would think that rising from the lowly status of a servant to the third rank of suk-yong for whom the king has shown much affection for, she would have received a great deal of favour from King Yeonsan, right?

However, later on, Jang Noksu exploited her authority by recklessly confiscating the assets of others and accepted all kinds of bribes and solicitations. Eventually, she suffered a miserable end due to the increased grievances of the royal subjects and the people towards her.

2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] Jang Noksu role_Jo Haneul

During the performance, the concubine-turned ‘Jang Noksu’ engaged in a battle for power with the royal subjects and this scene culminated in the eight-drum dance where the hitting of the drums represents the confrontations!

The charismatic appearance of ‘Jang Noksu’!

Looking forward to it!

Using 3 key words to organise the characteristics of the woman ‘Jang Noksu’!!

The rise from the lowly status of a servant to the third rank of suk-yong!!!

Although an evil and unfortunate woman, she lived a beautiful but turbulent life as an ‘entertainer’.

Meet this woman at <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>!

Now that I’ve got the ticket, I also took the pamphlet as it caught my eye.

Whenever I watch a performance, I would take a pamphlet as it helps me to understand the overall plot of the performance while watching it.

In addition, the pamphlet is not only in Korean, but Chinese, Japanese and English translations are all included in the pamphlet as well so foreign spectators will have no problem understanding the performance!

Can you see this??

There were so many people waiting to enter to see Jeongdong Theater <EMILE> !

Bursting with excitement for the premiere, I entered the venue together with the other spectators~

Snapped a photo at my assigned seat! Do keep in mind the rules of the audience etiquette when the performance starts!

A great performance is one achieved through the efforts of both the audience and the performers!

Photography and food is not allowed! Avoid kicking the seat in front of you!

Jeongdong Theater <EMILE> is a theatrical dance performance set in the Silla period.

The true story of the tragic birth of King Hyegong and Bell of King Seongdeok, and the fictional character ‘Emile’ created from the folklore of the Emile Bell.

The love story between a royalty and a lowly-born person is written.

In <EMILE>, the intricacy and splendidness of Silla is reflected wholly in the dance.

The scene where Hyegong and Emile fell in love is still deeply etched in my mind.

Emile, the bright and pure woman, and Hyegong who has the position of the king.

Both fell in love with each other and began their dance. Every single one of their gestures during the dance was lovely and beautiful!

This scene was exactly to my liking♥

(If I’m watching the performance again, it is definitely due to this scene!!!)

Yung, the ambitious royalty who reveals his obsessive greed for the throne.

Sohwa, the shaman who administers the rites, captures the attention of the audience with her prominent and stately aura.

The 70-minute performance flew by in the blink of an eye.

To comfort those who feeling sad after the end of the performance, a photo session had been prepared for spectators to take photos with the main characters of the cast.

The hawk-eyed cast!!

The broadcasting company also came to film the premiere~

Hoping that through this broadcast, more people across the nation will know that Gyeongju has amazing performances such as <EMILE>!

The Legend of Love Encompassing a Millennium, <EMILE>.
