<The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu> character analysis!

The third character of this series, the Deadly Cinderella of Joseon Dynasty who uses her skills in the arts to gain power!!!!

Let’s delve into the analysis of “Jang Noksu” using 3 key words! 🙂

#1. Heungcheong ‘Jang Noksu’

Heungcheong’ is a term used to describe the outstanding gisaengs of Joseon who were congregated during the reign of King Yeonsan.

At the beginning, ‘Jang Noksu’ was a poor woman and a member of the servant class.

She became a servant of Prince Je-an’s family and married another servant there, bearing a child.

In fact, she was not an outstanding beauty but a 30-year-old married woman…!!

However, at the age of 30, her youthful face made her look as if she’s 16!!

Thereafter, ‘Jang Noksu’ became a gisaeng of Gaheungcheong and began to master her dancing and singing skills.

Also, she was a sharp and clever woman who could see through a person easily.

#2. Entertainer ‘Jang Noksu’

In contrast with the depiction of Jang Noksu as an ‘evil woman’  or a ‘temptress’ in the countless productions she appeared in, she is portrayed as a beautiful ‘entertainer’ in <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>.

It was said that Jang Noksu’s excellent singing and outstanding dancing as a humble woman resulted in the widespread rumours of her.

In the actual diaries of King Yeonsan, he depicts Jang Noksu as follows:

“Her singing is so good that her voice sounds clear and distinct even if her lips doesn’t move…”

#3. Royal Consort Suk-yong of the Jang clan ‘Jang Noksu’

Suk-yong (淑容)’ was one of the ranks given by the king to his concubines.

King Yeonsan gave the rank of ‘suk-yong’ to Jang Noksu upon her entrance into the royal palace and addressed her as ‘Suk-yong Jang-ssi (淑容 張氏)’ (Royal Consort Suk-yong of the Jang clan) from then on.

You would think that rising from the lowly status of a servant to the third rank of suk-yong for whom the king has shown much affection for, she would have received a great deal of favour from King Yeonsan, right?

However, later on, Jang Noksu exploited her authority by recklessly confiscating the assets of others and accepted all kinds of bribes and solicitations. Eventually, she suffered a miserable end due to the increased grievances of the royal subjects and the people towards her.
