@noksutagram <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu> Understanding traditional Korean dance – the Gyobang dance
2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance
<The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>
The king of traditional Korean dances!
At <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>, you can witness the beauty of Korean dance and the charming ‘Jang Noksu’ with her dance skills!!
This time, we will go through the dances shown in <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu> one by one!
To begin, this is the gyobang dance (敎坊舞) which shows the impressive gibang culture in <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>!
Gyobang Dance (敎坊舞)
Gyobang dance is a dance that centres around the gisaengs who teach, learn and perform the dance!
Gyobang (敎坊) is an institution that is in charge of the singing and dancing of gisaengs, and that was how the name of the dance came about!
In the performance, the gisaengs perform an impressive gyobang dance as a response to the hallyangs who entered Gaheungcheong to find ‘Jang Noksu’!
Also, during the performance, the scene revealing the sensual inner thoughts of the hallyang is also hidden somewhere…..!!
On the outside, the dignity of the yangban may be shown, however, their true colours do not reflect this. Together with the gyobang dance, the slapstick comedy style that criticises the yangban can be seen!
The charming gyobang dance that reflects the balanced beauty using the minimum to achieve the maximum effect and also one that uses the beauty of symmetry to reveal the oddities of the upper class!!
You can find this in <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>, a combined gift set of traditional Korean dances 🙂
