For the third post of this series, this is the “gyobang fan dance”, a charismatic solo dance performed by Jang Noksu for the hallyangs, as seen in <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>! 🙂
The Gyobang Fan Dance
The hallyangs arrived at Gaheungcheong after hearing rumours of the whereabouts of Jang Noksu!
They even snorted and behaved rudely during the gyobang dance (敎坊舞) performed not by Jang Noksu, but by other gisaengs…
At that moment, Jang Noksu appears out of nowhere……!!!
She then reveals all the talent and gisaeng arts she possesses!!
A dance performed at gyobang while holding a fan, this is known as the “gyobang fan dance”, a solo dance of Jang Noksu!!!
There’s another secret hidden within this “gyobang fan dance”!
And the secret is that this dance is danced along to the rhythm of the drunggaengi (a type of traditional Korean drum), a village ritual of the east coast region…!!
The ‘drunggaengi rhythm’ is one of the rhythms originating from the village ritual of the east coast region. It consists of complicated rhythms and is difficult to dance along to!
The choreographer of the performance, Jung Hyejin, revealed this in an interview.
I wanted to express Jang Noksu as a character with an excellent sense of rhythm. To me, the drunggaengi rhythm of the village ritual of the east coast region is a mystical and difficult rhythm. If Jang Noksu could show her mastery of this rhythm with ease, it would give an impression of her being an extremely talented entertainer. That was why I included this rhythm in the choreography.
