To begin, this is the protagonist of <EMILE>, “The Divine Bell of King Seongdeok (The Emile Bell)”!

The Divine Bell of King Seongdeok, designated as National Treasure No. 29, was built to pay tribute to the memory of King Seongdeok, Silla’s 36th King, Hyegong.

The reason why the bell is also known as the Emile Bell comes from an ancient legend!

When the bell was built, a child was sacrificed, thus echoes of the bell, ‘em-ee-leh’, resemble the traditional Korean word for “mommy” and that was how the name “Emile” came about.

Presently, the bell is displayed at an outdoor exhibition at the Gyeongju National Museum. It is kept in a perfect state even after 1200 years and is known to have “the most beautiful sound of a bell” which was scientifically verified with its sound and structure!

This bell, the Emile Bell, and the legend of the tragic birth of the 36th king of Silla, ‘Hyegong’, form the basis of <EMILE>, the representative performance of Gyeongju, which depicts the love story between Hyegong and a lady named ‘Emile’.
