[The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] Understanding Traditional Korean Dance! Jang Noksu and King Yeonsan’s Last “Parting Dance”

@noksutagram <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu> Understanding traditional Korean dance – Jang Noksu and King Yeonsan’s Last Parting Dance

2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance

<The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>

The king of traditional Korean dances!

At <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>, you can witness the beauty of Korean dance and the charming ‘Jang Noksu’ with her dance skills!!

This time, we will go through the dances shown in <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu> one by one!

For the fifth post of this series, this is the last “Parting Dance” shared by Jang Noksu and King Yeonsan 🙂

The Parting Dance

photo: 2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] King Yeonsan role_ Lee Hyuk, Jang Noksu role_Jo Haneul

King Yeonsan and Jang Noksu are enjoying themselves on the boat ride.

However, due to the tyranny of Yeonsan, he has been abandoned by royal court subjects and the people and the king was shot with arrows on the boat. Jang Noksu eventually got shot with the arrows too.

photo: 2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] King Yeonsan role_ Lee Hyuk, Jang Noksu role_Jo Haneul

Thinking of each other till the very end, Noksu poured a drink for Yeonsan and before leaving for the afterlife, she showed her gisaeng arts for the last time….!!!

photo: 2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] King Yeonsan role_ Lee Hyuk, Jang Noksu role_Jo Haneul

Yeonsan dances along together, and at this time, the sapsal dog mask appears!

Just like how he met Noksu as a sapsal dog during their first meeting, he becomes Noksu’s sapsal dog at the end and the couple reaffirms their love!

photo: 2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] King Yeonsan role_ Lee Hyuk, Jang Noksu role_Jo Haneul

The last dance shared by Noksu and Yeonsan before they left this world is an original Korean contemporary creative dance!

Filled with both actors’ desperate emotions, the conclusion of the story is drawn through the presentation of Korea’s unique dance.

For all this time, Jang Noksu and King Yeonsan have been painted as a temptress and a tyrant.

<The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu> is a traditional Korean dance performance that focuses on the gisaeng arts possessed by Jang Noksu and the portrayal of Yeonsan who loves gisaeng arts and entertainment.

If you wish to witness the dances of the woman who climbs her way to the throne from a lowly status using only her gisaeng arts…!

Come and watch the king of traditional Korean dances <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu> at Jeongdong Theater! 🙂

“Loved the show, very insightful to see the cast dancing in action. Make sure to arrive early and use the bathroom before the show starts. Would definitely see it again… We were able to take pictures with the three main characters first since we sat all the way in the back row before anyone could get in line. Free program book and pistachios with roasted peppers! And free malt non alcoholic beverage at the shop nearby.”

“Beautiful performance! The show was amazing. Only downside was that I left my bag in my seat which I paid extra for and had to sit in the very last row upon returning from the restroom.”

[The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] August Summer Event Reviews by KLOOK Visitors

Here are some recent reviews of <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu> written by visitors who came to Jeongdong Theater to catch the performance!?

“Our view was really good because of the VIP tickets we booked through KLOOK. Starting from August, they are giving each person a set of pistachios and non-alcoholic beer. When we were getting our tickets at the counter, the staff, who could speak Mandarin, welcomed us and even brought us to the cafe to exchange our free drinks. Thank you! I watched <Miso> in the past and <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu> was equally exhilarating! The female protagonist’s drum skills and dance skills were incredible. Even her subtle actions exudes the aura of Jang Noksu. A great decision to cast her! This is definitely a fine production of Jeongdong Theater!”
– YO*

“We went to the ticket box, showed the QR code and got the tickets immediately. They even gave us two bags of pistachios. The cast was professional and focused and the traditional Korean costumes were beautiful. However, it is better to learn a bit more about the plot from the brochure before watching. The seats arranged by KLOOK were extremely good. We had a clear and full view from the fourth row.”

The Three-drum Dance, Five-drum Dance and Eight-drum Dance

2018 Jeongdong Theater Gyeongju Brand Performance [EMILE]

The drum dance, commonly known as the “three-drum dance” and the “five-drum dance”!

Usually, the dance which shows many people playing drums that are secured is known as the ‘drum dance’ and according to the number of drums used, the dance can also be called the “three-drum dance”, the “five-drum dance”, etc!

However, the ‘drum dance’ seen in <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu> is slightly different compared to the common drum dance!

2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] Jang Noksu role_Jo Haneul

In <The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu>, instead of using drums that are secured, the drums are held by people, giving an illusion of moving drums.

Transforming to the “three-drum dance”, “five-drum dance” and even “eight-drum dance”, this drum dance is ever-changing!

2018 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series Performance [The Palace: Tale of Jang Noksu] Jang Noksu role_Jo Haneul

Through this drum dance, the rivalry between the powerful Jang Noksu and royal court subjects is depicted, and a charismatic and exhilarating scene can be seen.
