Summer Vacation in Three Countries

Korea

In the old days, many students were waiting for the summer vacation! Because they extricated from their school life and study. They visited their grandparents who were living in country side and they go to swimming, fishing and helping their grandparents to farm.

However, in these days, the kids don’t have those chance because more and more their grandparents are not living in country side any more. However, for those children, many country life experience programs cover it.

For example, Korean Folk Village in Yong-in programed “The Countryside Story in Summer”. Kids can experience swimming, handcraft and camping etc. through the program.

Also, summer vacation became a period to make up for their supplementary study. It means children are keep studying during their vacation or they participate to some camp related to their study such as English Camp, Science Camp or History Camp.

Especially, English Camp is one of the most famous experiences for the children during their vacation period. Many children are head to New Zealand, Australia and Philippine etc. to participate the camp. They not only lean English but also experience the culture and many activities there.

Many IT industry related company hold Science Camp for elementary and middle school students during the vacation. The students have chance to experiment by themselves as well as to visit labs of the company.

Moreover, many historical museums and institutions organize “History Experience Camp” as well. Especially, Gyeongju is the most famous destination for the students to study the ancient history of Korea.

They visit from “Cheomseongdae” which is the oldest observatory in the world, built in 7th Century and to Bulguksa and Seokfulam Temple. Also, visiting Gyeongju National Museum offers them the experience to learn more about the artistries of Silla dynasty.

But the most recommendation is the performance “Silla” in Jeongdong Theater in Gyeongju. The students will learn about the myth from Silla from the performance as well as learn about Korean traditional performing arts! You can reserve the ticket on:

In Japan, many schools last from the middle of July to the end of August. Universities have longer summer holiday until the end of September.

Usually Japanese students of elementary school, junior high school and high school get homework from school to do during the summer holidays. The level is different for each grade, but everybody has to, for example, solve problems in their workbooks, create something with clay or wood, write and essay about a book, and make a picture diary.

One of the unique homework for elementary school students is radio exercise. They have to take their roll call card and get it stamped every day after doing physical exercise to music and MC’s voice on the radio. The toughest part is that the exercises start from six thirty in the morning all over Japan, so they have to get up early. This homework is also supposed to be help them keep getting up early in the morning during summer holiday.

(They are doing radio exercise in school, park or temple)

(radio exercise card)

In addition, most of elementary schools have swimming lessons for their students during summer holiday. So many students go to school even though they are on holiday.

Japanese junior high school students and high school students are very busy with club activities such as soccer, baseball, tennis, volleyball and brass band. There are lots of competitions around summer. Students practice very hard to do their performance well.

Then most of students do club activities and go to a cramming school. Cramming schools have summer programs and classes.

(high school students-baseball club. Big competition called”甲子園”(Ko-shien))

(cramming school- summer class)

University students have more free time. They need to research their study but enjoy travelling and doing part-time job.

Part 2 Japanese wedding ceremonies and receptions

Marriage has traditionally been considered a matter between families rather than individuals,
and wedding ceremonies and receptions are conducted as such under the family names.
People used to invite matchmakers to witness the marriage.
However not so many people have a matchmaker these days.

A bride who chooses a Japanese style wedding will be in a white wedding kimono, shiromuku
and have a tall, elegant tied-up hairstyle, which will be covered with the bride’s hood.
The groom traditionally wears a haori and hakama, Japanese style kimono for men with family crest.

Shintonist is the most popular ceremony style in Japan.
However there are also Buddhist and Christian style weddings,
while some people prefer jinzenshiki ,which are nonreligious ceremonies.
Depending on the type of wedding, the ceremony is conducted at a shrine, temple, church and so on.
Also many hotels have a wedding center ,
which includes a ballroom where the reception can be held after a wedding ceremony.
The following is the typical course of events at wedding reception.
It usually takes for 2 or 3 hours to have a wedding reception in Japan.

Many Japanese women want to have a wedding ceremony and reception in June.

Part 3 Korean Wedding

Marriage in South Korea is similar to that in the West, but has unique features of its own,
especially due to the influence of Korean Confucianism.

There are 2 kinds of wedding ceremony : One is traditional and the other is modern-westernized.

Traditional Wedding

Traditional Wedding in Korea is mostly practiced by international couple (between Korean-Non Korean).
It seems effected by Korean Confucianism
however some parts of the ceremony are made by contemporary people.
Bride and Groom wear traditional dress called Han-bok in the traditional wedding
but the guests wear modern suit.

Modern style wedding ceremonies

In larger cities, luxury hotels will have ‘wedding halls’ or ballrooms used specifically for wedding ceremonies.
These rooms are decorated with a wedding motif and are rented to couples.
Other wedding halls are independent facilities that can accommodate several different weddings at once.
Today, many couples will initially have a more ‘Westernized’ ceremony
with tuxedo attire and white wedding gown, then proceed with a smaller-scale,
traditional Korean wedding after the main ceremony.

#Congratulatory Money

In Korea, when you are invited to a wedding ceremony,
you have to pay ‘Congratulatory Money’(축의금) at the Robby.
There are two tables for the payment; groom’s side and brides’ side
so you will pay as from where you are invited.
Normally, the money is paid as 30,000KRW, 50,000KRW or 10,000KRW.
It depends on how much you are close to the groom or bride.

First of all, Nana talked about the new year’s day in Taiwan.

Q.What is special activities to celebrate new year’s day in Taiwan?

TAWWe hang out some words to wish on rectangular paper and “CHUNLIAN(春联)” which is a square paper written a inverted word of Lucky(福) on front door of the house. It has a meaning of calling much of luck in the house.

Chinese Chunlian

Also, adults play mah-jong and children set off firecrackers. During 3 days from the new year’s day, it is forbidden to do laundry and to throw away because it is considered as letting lucky go away. Two days after the new year’s day, ㅡmarried women can go their parent’s home.

Q.How long do you have the holiday for new year’s day?

Chinese and Taiwanese have one week for the holiday.

Q. Do you have any special food to celebrate the new year’s day?

For the dinner of the new year’s day, we have 2 fishes on the table but we only eat one of them. Fish signifies “long life” so we eat it.
Also we don’t cook in New Year’s day to avoid see blood in the day. Therefore we cook a day before for new year’s day.

We eat dumplings at midnight of 1st of Jan(of the lunar calendar). The Dumpling has a meaning of earning more money as it looks like YUANBAO, the coin of ancient China.

Q. What is special thing to celebrating new year’s day in Japan?

2017-02-13 (1)We celebrate new year’s day on the January. 1st of the solar calendar. It is different with China and Korea where they celebrate it with lunar calendar. Therefore it is not familiar to me to celebrate it with lunar calendar.

In Japan, we eat Buckwheat soba noodle in the new year’s day. It signifies ‘long life’ as it has long noodle.

Also, we eat Osechi(おせち) in the lunch of new year’s day. In the old days, grand mothers and mothers used to make it but in now days, people order it from department store.

오세치Osechi(おせち) : Traditional Japanese New Year Foods. All foods for the first month of the year are called ‘Osechi’

Korea has Tteokguk for new years day. Japan also has O-zoni which is similar with Tteokguk but it tastes different depends on provinces and families. Especially, People in Osaka and Nagoya make it with Miso and People in Tokyo make it Soy source. We eat it every morning from 1st to 3rd of January.

IMG_0417O-zoni [お雜煮] : Traditional Japanese New Year Foods like Osechi.

And Japanese people go to Shinto shrine on 1st of January. And department store organize ‘Lucky bag event’. There are lucky bags from 5 thousands Yen to 50 thousands Yen. It is not possible to know what is included in the bag. Therefore it is called ‘Lucky bag event’.

The holiday is usually until 5th of January.

Q. How Korean people celebrate the new years day?

KORIt seems like that Japan is influenced by western culture and Korea is influenced by both of Chinese and western culture. Korean people celebrate both of Solar and Lunar calendars.

On the last day of the year. people go to Bosingak, a large bell pavilion, to hear the new year’s bell ringing or go to east sea to see the first sun rise.

On Jan. 1 of Solar calendar is a holiday (just one day) and on the new year’s day of lunar calendar, we have 3 days of holiday.

Korean people think that they will get 1 year old after eating a bowl of Tteokguk.

한국의 떡국Tteokguk : Traditional Korean New Year’s Food.

Q. What is difficult thing to you when you celebrate the new year’s day in Korea?
2017-02-13 (1) It is difficult to count Korean age. It is different with other countries. They always say their age adding one year more.

KORYes, it is different with other countries. In other countries, people get 1 year on their birth day but in Korea, we get a year on New years day! That is why Korean people say their age with 1 more year.

Q. Any other things to do in new year’s day?

KORIn the morning of new year’s day, Korean people do Charye which is ritual for ancestors. Also we have special way of new year’s greetings, Sebae(세배). When children do Sebae to olders, the adults give money to them. When I was young, it was great joy to do Sebae going around to relations’ home as I could get more money! Do you also have similar things?

TAW

When children say ‘Happy New Year’ to adults, they give money in Hongbao to kids. Hongbao is red envelop or red pocket with money.

2017-02-13 (1)

Japan also have new years money. It is same thing in the three countries. We also put some money in pretty envelop for kids. There are many envelope with animation characters.

KOR

The cute envelopes exist in Korea as well. Also we give new bill to kids.

The new years day in the three countries are same, same but different!
