The Palace: Tale of Jang Nok-Su, Learning Korean Traditional Dance Pt 1

Hello, this is Jeongdong Theater. It is Autumn in Korea and watching the seasons change slowly and the trees change colors seems to fill the heart with joy. But if you add culture and dance to this rich emotion, will the rest of October not be a little happier?

Jeongdong Theater, located on Jeongdong-gil, filled with ambiance and romance, is a traditional performing art and performance center representing Korea. We present high-quality performances that reinterpret our traditional culture and art.

In particular, Jeongdong Theater’s permanent performance is a creative dance-drama that shows the story of Jang Nok-Soo, who lived a dramatic life from an innocent, tomboy-like slave, to one of the best dancers and singer of her time, to becoming a woman of the royal power, this show unfolds her life as an art piece.

According to Nok-su’s identity, Korean people’s culture, giseng culture, and palace culture are shown through the play and dance. In particular, The Palace: Tale of Jang Nok Su is a performance that pays attention to Jang Nok Su as an outstanding artist.

So be prepared!

We have divided this series into two. Today, let’s take a look at the dances that Nok-su performed in her early days.

Janggo Dance

Nok-su became a courtesan after her skills and talents were recognized by Je-an Daegun . Devoted to a full-fledged giseng training, she dances with her Janggu strapped on her shoulders. Janggu Dance is also called Janggo-mo or Janggo Dance.

Janggu dance is divided according to whether it is mainly dancing or playing the drum. Janggu dances performed in Gibangs are dances, and Janggu dances in Pungmulnori are mainly playing the drums.

Of course, the courtesan Nok-su was dance-oriented. Thus, this is a Janggu dance show with fun and flirty behavior. It is not known when the instrument called Janggu was incorporated into this particular dance. However, it is said that the style of hanging the rope at an angle with a string attached to the Janggu and tapping the Janggu was mainly performed by the private artists of the Joseon Dynasty.

Hanryang Dance

Under the teachings of Je-an Daegun, Noksu blossoms artistically and becomes the best courtesan of Joseon. And Nok-su as an entertainer was to entice the men.

Hanyang Dance is a dance that expresses elegance and excitement. In this scene, Nok-su dances with a fan. However, the dance form is not constant and there are no rules. The dancer can freely improvise according to the situation. However, in this situation, she was dancing for the scholars(Seonbi) so Seonbi’s elegance was infused with the dance. In particular, the figure of a crane symbolizing scholars is shaped and danced.

Kyobang Salpuri Dance

Kyobang is an institution that presided over teaching gisengs dances and songs around the Joseon Dynasty. There are various types of dance like sword dances, bridge dances, etc

The dances featured in are Salpuri dance and Fan dance. First of all, the Salpuri dance is a word from shamanism that means to loosen the flesh. Therefore, it can be called ‘dance to lose weight’. Originally, it started as a shamanic dance with a strong ritual attached to it, but it was later reestablished as an art. Flirting is required in this dance so it’s famous among the gisengs and it’s also a very delicate dance.

Fan dance

The fan dance is probably the most famous traditional dance. In fact, the fan dance is not a traditional dance of Korea. This dance was created by dancer Kim Baek-bong in 1954.

Of course, there are many dances with fans in the national dances of the world, including shaman dances. But most of those dances are not fan centered. However, Nok-su’s fan dance shows the best technique to open, fold, wind, and spread.

This technique-oriented fan dance was first presented at the Kimbaekbong Dance Presentation at the Seoul Construction Center on November 1954.

Then in the 1968 Mexico Olympics, the fan dance was reconstructed and developed into a group of dances. The Korean Folk Arts Group played a fan dance at the World Excellent Art Festival and World Folklore Festival held together with the Olympics. Since then, fan dance has become one of the most representative dances in the world.

Explore Jeongdong-gil: Donuimun Museum

Fall is coming and we are bracing for the cold here in Jeongdong Theater. However, there are still many places around the theater to be explored.

Introducing the Donuimun Museum Village near Jeongdong Theater.

Donuimun Museum Village is a museum in the form of a village. It is located in a retro area that preserved old buildings and old alleys such as Hanok, flowering houses, Japanese houses in the Joseon Dynasty, slabs and French houses from the 1970s and 1980s, as an urban regeneration project. After looking round the village, we recommend our performance of <The Palace: The Tale of Jang Nok-su>.

<The Palace: The Tale of Jang Nok-su> is a creative dance drama that shows the story of Jang Nok-su who lived a dramatic life as a slave, courtesan, and concubine through traditional dance. The story of Jang Nok-su shows the different stages of her life as a innocent and tomboy-like slave, as a protagonist who dance and voiced ranked her as a top artist of her time, and finally as Je-an Degun’s woman in the royal court.

‘100-year Modern Modern Archives of Memory’

Donuimun is the old name of Seodaemun. Seodaemun, which means the western big gate of Hanyang Doseong, the Seoul’s four major gates along the Seoul Wall Fortress. Donuimun Gate, first constructed in 1396, was rebuilt in 1413 at Jeongdong Crossroads. Since then, the gate has been called “Saemun” (新聞), which means “new door,” and the area inside Don’s Gate was called “Saemunangol” or “Sammunan neighborhood.”

Saemunan was a crowded area of private tutoring, a symbol of private education, from the 1960s to the 1970s. Since the 80’s, it has been a rumored food alley. However, as the New Town development project began in the 2000s, Seoul remodeled the village and buildings of Saemunan Village and donated it to the Donuimun Museum Village. 40 of 63 existing homes were maintained and repaired, and some houses were left behind, creating a courtyard for the village community, and the old alleys were kept intact. Although it was opened in 2017, the Donuimun Museum Village was newly renovated in April of this year, with the concept of ‘100-year modern and archive of memory.’

The village consists of three major themes: village exhibition hall (16 dong), experiential education hall (9 dong), and village creation center (9 dong).

At the village center in the center of the village, concerts are held every day at 12:10 noon (1pm on weekends). There are also cultural events that citizens suggest and conduct on their own.
First of all, the Village Exhibition Hall is an annex to the Seoul Museum of History, where you can feel and experience the history of the old Saemunan neighborhood and the sensitivity of the 60~80s analog generation. In the Donuimun Exhibition Hall, you can check the history and culture of the Donuimun era, the urban regeneration and life records of Saemunan neighborhood. There is also the “Donguimungu-guru,” which recreates the social space of the former blooming members, and the “Independence activist’s house”, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Provisional Government and the Republic of Korea.
If you go to the side alley, you will be able to travel back in time from the 1960s to the 80s. The Living History Exhibition Hall recreated the homes of the 1960s and 1980s, including a kitchen with a hut, a room with mother-of-pearl, and a study room with a uniform. You can enjoy pastime games such as “ Tsamori Yongwon, ” a modern barber shop, “ Seodaemun photo studio ” with the concept of a modern social center and a wedding hall in the 1980s, “ Saemunan Theatre ”, a Tetris, and a street fighter that recreate the old movie theater. You can feel the retro sensibility in ‘Donuimun Computer Game Center and Manga Room’.

At the Seoul Future Heritage Hall, you can see 10 future heritage sites in Jongno and Euljiro along the tram lines of Seoul in the 1930s. Hanoks on one side of the village courtyard allow you to experience Hanji crafts, calligraphy, fashion, and embroidery, and many more. However, you must first make a reservation on the homepage for these experiences. In the ‘Myeongin Gallery’, there is a permanent exhibition where you can enjoy the works of masters in the experience education center.

There is also a civic gallery and artist gallery. Here, a collection of collections gathered by citizen collectors and works by artists and curators appropriate for the village are displayed. The Village Creation Center, located throughout the village, also hosts exhibitions and workshops for tenant artists that fit the concept of the village. New exhibitions are also held every month in the artist gallery. Currently, the main exhibition “City Exhibition” of the “2019 Seoul Urban Biennale” will be held in the Donuimun Museum Village until November 10th.

Interview with Hyuk Lee

<Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>

A single-hearted man, the role of ‘Dodam’, a court worrier

Interview with ‘Hyuk Lee’

Here is a man.

A single-hearted devotion. A worrier who loves only one woman.

Dadam, we can call him a romantist.

I met Hyuk Lee who has role of ‘Dodam’, the pioneer of <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>.

<Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More> has double casting.

The main characters are the king, queen, the best court dancer ‘Seoryeon’, the best worrier in the court ‘Dodam’
and shaman of the court, ‘Mohwa’.

The relationship of the characters is very simple.

Seoryeon and Dodam are loved to each other.

The king has desire of Seoryeon and the queen is jealous to it.

Dodam is a worrier of the court but he loses his allegiance toward the King to protect his love.

A battle between the King and Dodam unfolds

Through the interview, let’s hear from Hyuk Lee, one of the double casted Dodam.

Q.How was your first feeling of the performance <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>

I was used to  respect Chunghan Kim, the director and choreographer of this performance.

He was director of <Chunhyang> of Jeongdong Theater in 2012 and I acted the main characters Mongryong and Byeon for the performance.

And now I’m very glad to join his work again at the very first time.

Q. What is your best scene of <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>?

In this work, there are various scenes.

They include an entertainment of the Joseon court, the scene of worriers’ training
and the scene of court ritual which contains Korean traditional aspect.

Among these scenes, I like the Romantic scene.

You must meet the ‘Romance’ in director Kim’s work.

In this performance, there is a very beautiful duet scene of lovely man and woman.

In the scene, Seoryeon who was thrown of the court plays Haeguem
and Dodam who was training in a forest suddenly hears the music and starts to look for her.

Finally, the two meet each other and play music together.

After confirming their love, they dance.

The dance under the moonlight is the best scene I think.

Q. What is your favorite role exclude ‘Dodam’?

I think ‘Mohwa’, the court shaman is very attractive character.

She has very huge charisma and she is very similar with the message of this story.

As we have male shaman, I think that I can show very powerful and different shaman character.

Therefore, I would like to act Mohwa.

Q. What is the similarity of the character ‘Dodam’ and you, your self?

I think this story has the things which could happen in our reality.

Love, Jealous and unexpected incidences are included.

Dodam is a man who throw out his allegiance to protect his love.

It is a man’s devotion and sacrifice.

Whoever, Men dream to help their lover to overcome difficulties and to protect her sacrificing themselves.

I think this is similarity between the character and me.

Q. Jeongdong Theater is trying to present new traditional performance.

What is the merit of <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More> as a future-traditional performance?

The dance of this work is based on Korean tradition but it newly created.

In the opening scene, it shows various court dances such as ritual group dance, Taepyeongmu of the queen and the sword dance.

This performance presents beautiful Korean court ceremony with new interpretation for foreign and local audiences.

As it has created piece, the audiences who have no experience about Korean tradition also easily accept it.

Also, it shows a hopeless love story like Korean version of  ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

Therefore it easily get the sympathy from the audiences.

I’m sure that it is a performance where you can experience the contemporary and modern arts of Korean tradition with the essence of Korean culture through the music which is featured by Aeri Park, one of the best Korean traditional vocalists.

Q. Before closing the interview, please give some comment to the audience who have never experienced Korean traditional dance.

Korean dance has a connotation as a boring arts.

However, through this performance, you can finally meet various attraction of Korean dance.

Interview with Goun Lee

<Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>

Absolute Charisma, ‘Mowha’ the court shaman.

Interview with ‘Goun Lee’, the actress.

Various attractive characters appear such as the court dancer ‘Seoryeon’ and the court worrier ‘Dodam’

in ‘Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More’, the performance of Jeongdong Theater.

Among the characters, there is a very impressive character,
There is ‘Mohwa’ who is the court shaman with very strong charisma and she is charge of all of ritual in the court.

I met ‘Goun Lee’ who plays ‘Mohwa'(Double casted),
the important character who lead the highlight scene -Seoryeon’s revivification.

Q. Please introduce your self and Mohwa

Hello. My name is Goun Lee . I graduated college just now and  made the first stage appearance.

My role ‘Mohwa’ is a character of a court shaman
who prays for the peace in the court and defends the nation from the evil energy.

Q. <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More> is a performance with story but it has no line.

Do you have any difficulties to act or to describe the story.

I have never dance with story line.

Therefore, personally, I have difficulties to describe and to express the emotion
and I felt that I was not familiar with it

During the rehearsal time, I had time alone to concentrate and to throw out this unfamiliar felling.

However, as the performance started, I could focus naturally on the story which is leaded by the protagonists.

I described the emotion and acted without awareness it.

Therefore, now I more and more focus on the story and try to find the face act and the emotion.

Q. For the beginning to the highlight scene of the last part, Mohwa has a central role.

The ritual seems like have the form but doesn’t look like the tradition.

Did you mind or try anything for this?

You might imagine a gut(Shaman ritual) of Mudang(shaman) or of chief priest.

But I don’t think that it is not the concept of this performance.

Just from the time setting, it is required to present the shamanism and folk religion in the cultural aspect.

I think that the scene of Mohwa’s ritual might be the open at the beginning and the close of the end.

I hope the audience to see this scenes not with the perspective of shamanic religion but with the cultural perspective.

Also, when I studied about the scene and the character, I have referred to many video clips on the contemporary shamanic ritual and the traditional ritual.

I have tried to learn the motion and emotion of them.

Especially, as it has abstract aspect of praying in the middle of nothing,

I tried to find the message of this story.

Q. We can not skip to talk about the scene of ‘Revivification’ when we talk about ‘Mohwa’.

What do you think the attraction of the scene is?

In the scene of ‘Revivification’, everything is played on the stage such as music and acting in live  and all of the characters appear on the stage.

It is enough to say the attraction.

But sound of percussion, which raised more and more describes the heart sound of Seoryeon.

I think the percussion play describes well this whole atmosphere of this scene.

As this scene is the very important, we had lots of rehearsal for it.

For me, it felt pressured as I need to lead this scene.

However, all the actors and actress have one mind on the stage

and it brought result of the great scene.

Q. <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More> is played by double cast actors.

So please introduce your ‘Mohwa’ comparing with the other.

I think that Mohwa is a character who cherishes ‘Dodam’.

Therefore, Director Kim asked me to have a mother’s heart like Dodam’s mother explaining me about the character.

I could not understand the ‘mother’s heart and it was not easy as my first acting.

I tried to express an understated affection rather than unconditional love.

Describing rational feeling rather than emotional feeling.
This is the attraction of Mohwa which is played by me.

Q. Do you have any behind story during the performance?

This is my first stage outside of the college.

Therefore, I run busy as a hen with a chicken and did many mistakes.

I have miss a lot the props but now I have ability to handle these mistake.

Q. Do you have any commentary to the audiences?

I perform everyday but it is the first time for the audience.

Therefore, I tried not to fall into mannerism.

Everyday, I try to change the motion and expression so I could perform like very first time.

And I hope many people come to the theater.

More audience, more complete the performance.

Therefore, I hope many people come to see the performance and make it together.

And when the audiences love my character, Mohwa, I also have a promise to my self to do my best.

[Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More] Two folktales in the performance.

[Jeongdong Press : <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>_’The tale of Mrs Domi’ and  ‘Igongbonpuri’]

<Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>

Where you can meet the essence of Korean Dance.

Jeongdong Theater, which is located in Jeongdong-gil; the beautiful street in flower-blooming pring,

has a meaning of succession of ‘Wongaksa’, the first modern theater in Korea.

Jeongdong has presented performances which retells Korean folktales
and has help the audiences to understand it with qualified stage.

Especially, <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>, which has its premier on last April. 6,
is a well-made Korean traditional dance drama on which Korean folktales and traditional dance are combined.

This performance sends us a message about the true love,
combining Korean folktales and newly recreating them as a Korean traditional dance drama.

At the first, ‘The tale of Mrs Domi’ is a folktale of the period of three states in Korea.

The king of Baekje has Mrs Domi, a humble woman, in his mind and he put her in danger to make her parting with her husband.

However, with her wise courage, she overcomes from the trick of the king confirming the love with her husband.

Igongbonpuri, another folktale in the performance, is a narrative shamanic myth in Jeju.

The story is about a woman called Wongangam who died after her slave life in difficulties.

She finally comes to life again as a flower called Wongangami
thanks to her husband and son who buried her body in a flower garden.

These two stories were combined and the performance <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More> came out.

This story which came from the two folktales contains the theme of ‘overcoming’ and ‘reviving’
which feature frequently in Korean traditional ideology
so the meanings are coming heavily to the audiences who live in modern society.

The image of strong woman from Mrs Domi and Wongangami is described
into Seoryeon’s character, the protagonist of the performance.

In the background of imaginary Joseon Dynasty, this performance presents
the image of wise and strong woman who keeps her ideals in the difficulties
and the path of achieving her wishes from her revive
into traditional dance drama.

The lyrics from <A song of floral tribute> and <A love song> cite words from folktales which are very familiar to Korean people
and it raises bond of sympathy.

Also, you can see various Korean traditional dance
such as
parilmu, a dance performed by 64 female dancers in ritual ceremony,

Taepyeongmu, a dance praying for the peaceful reign and prosperity of the royal family,

Geommu, a traditional sword dance which became powerful in the performance as man’s dance.

I would love to strongly recommend this performance
to whom love Korean traditional dance and look forward beautiful dance performance!

2017 Jeongdong Theater Tradition Series

<Lotus, A Flower Come Out Once More>

Meeting with Haneul Cho, the Main Dancer !

It was last of March in the full of spring whether,
I visited in the rehearsal room of <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More> which will be opened soon at April. 6.

I saw actors who go at their rehearsal in details even if it was the lunch time.

I interviewed Haneul Cho who acts as ‘Seo-ryon’, the main character to know more about the performance!

Let’s meet her together!

Q: Please introduce your self and your character, ‘Seo-ryeon’
A: Hello
. My name is Haneul Cho and I act ‘Seo-ryeon’, the main character in the performane ‘Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More’. The name of ‘Seo-ryeon’ means ‘Water Lily which comes out at dawn, early in the morning’. She is the best dancer in the court who is good at play music and dance.

Q: What do you focus for describe the character ‘Seo-ryeon’?
A: In a scene where Seo-ryeon dances with Heaguem, a Korean traditional instrument, I’m doing my best to contain the emotion rather then just describe the playing of the instrument.

Q: Did you refer to any other character in Movie or Drama to describe ‘Seo-ryeon’?
A: When you see the performance, you also will find that this performance is very resemble to <Romeo and Juliet> in the part of emotion. To describe the love, conflict and sorrow, I refer to the movie. Also, I refer to a Korean historical drama, <Dong-i> where the main character play Haegeum in her joy or sorrow.

Q: What is your specially difficult thing or joyful thing to act ‘Seo-ryeon’ relative to other role that you did?
A: I have played Haeguem in many times but I’ve never dance with it.

It is very difficult to describe various emotions through the dance with the instrument
becuase I was experienced to describe the emotion only through my body.

However it became the most joyful and interest part as I’ve rehears it a lot.

Q: Performances of Jeongdong Theater mostly have a form of drama telling with Korean traditional dance.
As you are a dancer, what is the different thing compare with general dance performances?

A: The general dance performances only focus on the movement of dancer but in this performance, Chung-han Kim, the director, checked acting in very detail.

Also as Jeongdong theater has a stage which is very close to the audiences for comunication,
It is also different thing that it is easy to generously deliver the emotion and the atmosphere of the dram through the dance.

Q: Please introduce the highlight scene of <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>
A: In <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More>,
the highlights is Korean traditional group dance such as sword dance, small drum dance and five drums dance
as well as the love story.

Also the haegeum play of Seo-ryeon and Daegeum play of Dodam also scenes that you should never miss.

Q: As before the opening on April.6,
Please give any recommendation to the audiences who will come to see the performance.

A: The performance <Lotus, A Flower Comes Out Once More> which will begin at the spring of April
will give you the smell of the spring and the romance like a cherry blossom.

We, all of the actors and the staffs, prepared this performance on our best. Please give more interest and love to it!
